History of the Town of Clark's Harbour
Clark's Harbour is the only town on Cape Sable Island. The town enjoys a very interesting history that goes back many centuries. The Micmac were the first people to inhabit Cape Sable Island. They made the island their summer encampment. The first permanent settler to this island was Daniel Vincent, who settled on the southern side of the island. He never married or had children, so to remember him a road was named after him, Daniel's Head.Archelaus Smith was also another settler that is considered one of the first to settle on Cape Sable Island. Mr. Smith moved from Cape Cod to Barrington in 1760, with his wife and four children. They lived in Barrington for twelve years, until they moved to Cape Island in 1773, because of better fishing grounds. He also made a living as the island's magistrate and surveyor. The Archelaus Smith Museum can be found in Centerville, a short distance from Clark's Harbour, with lots of interesting information and artifacts.
