Local Dialect and Nicknames
Here is only some of the local dialect that you may hear when you visit Clark's Harbour
Bone up- To question, "I'll bone up her later about that."
Cockerwitters- people from the Woods Harbour and Shag Harbour area of Shelburne County.
Dollop- A rough measurement, particularly of things that are spooned into a recipe.
Ducking- Duck hunting.
Ever- used as an intensifier, as in "Is it ever hot outside!" or "Is that flower ever pretty."
Cunnin'- Cute, pleasing to the eyes.
Feed the gulls- be sick.
Fired it- threw it away, "I fired it out the window!"
Hard shape- run down, rusty or rotting.
"How are you living?"- how are you?
Imagine- "I imagine" is a very common way of saying "yes".
Jonah- A jinx or unlucky.
Kink- A nap, a short sleep.
Mug-up- a snack.
Quite- very, "This house is quite small."
Rinctum- An especially violent fit of temper.
Right- another word for "very", "This is right hot."
Rimracked- destroy, damage badly.
Spleeny- fussy, touchy or melancholic.
Steaker- A really big fish.
Stivver- Stagger.
Ugly- mad, cross, bad tempered.
Wharf rat- a person who hangs around the wharf a lot.
"Whatever turns your crank"- whatever causes you to take notice.
